Trauma Q&A
What causes trauma?
Trauma can arise from experiencing or witnessing events that are perilous, terrifying, or life-endangering. Additionally, trauma can develop from prolonged exposure to stressful situations, like emotional abuse. Common sources of trauma encompass:
- Sexual assault
- Physical abuse
- Emotional abuse
- Verbal abuse
- Childhood neglect
- Military experiences
- Gun violence
- Domestic violence
- Automobile accidents and other mishaps
- Burglary or home invasion
- The death or severe illness of someone close
- Natural catastrophes (such as hurricanes, floods, earthquakes)
Experiences of bullying and intimidation are also recognized as potential traumatic events.
What mental health disorders are associated with trauma?
Several disorders are related to trauma, including:
Acute Stress Disorder: This condition involves severe symptoms that emerge immediately following a traumatic experience. Symptoms can include anxiety, stress, depression, nightmares, flashbacks, and sleep disturbances. Individuals may actively avoid reminders of the trauma, which, when encountered, can provoke intense reactions such as anger or aggression.
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): If the symptoms of acute stress disorder persist beyond a month, the diagnosis may progress to PTSD. For many, the symptoms of PTSD worsen over time and can become incapacitating.
Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD): RAD is diagnosed in infants and young children who fail to establish a secure attachment with their caregivers, often due to abuse or emotional neglect. Without intervention, the emotional and psychological repercussions can extend into adulthood.
Adjustment Disorder: This disorder manifests as difficulty in coping with life changes or stressful events, such as relocation or separation from a significant other. Symptoms, including anxiety, depression, sadness, and anger, usually appear within three months of the stressor and can cause considerable distress.
